Two-day visit highlights Colorado State University’s ‘Key Communities’ and other Fort Collins area programs helping students move into the workforce

DENVER — Tuesday, October 7, 2014 — Throughout the month of October, Lt. Gov. Garcia will be visiting eight college campuses selected through a competitive process to highlight programs that ensure college students graduate and are ready to move into the workforce.   Colorado Completes!, an initiative of the Colorado Department of Higher Education, will kick off in Fort Collins with a visit to Colorado State University’s Key Communities program. Additionally, the Lt. Gov. will visit programs and host community conversations dedicated to increasing student graduation rates and ensuring students have the skills and support they need to fulfill industry labor demands of the future.

The Fort Collins tour includes the following events:

Wednesday, October 8th:

9:30 a.m. - Lt. Gov. Garcia will visit the Colorado Reading Corps tutoring program sponsored by United Way of Larimer County, a partner of Serve Colorado, the Governor’s Commission on Community Service. The program utilizes AmeriCorps members to provide daily one-on-one intervention to struggling readers.

12:00 p.m. - Lt. Gov. Garcia will visit Colorado State University’s Key Communities program to kick off Colorado Completes! The program will begin with a luncheon and overview of CSU’s programming to ensure first-year students are surrounded with the support they need to complete their critical freshman year and move forward toward graduation.

1:45 p.m. - Lt. Gov. Garcia will make public remarks and interact with students and staff of Key Communities during a “Poster Session” where students will highlight their work and share their own experiences having been part of the Key Communities program.

Thursday, October 9th:

8:00 a.m. - Lt. Gov. Garcia will attend a Sector Partnership Round​ T​able, with the NoCO Manufacturing Partnership, hosted by Wolf Robotics followed by a tour of the facilities. Per the Colorado Blueprint, Advanced Manufacturing is a key industry for Colorado and the discussion will include education, industry and public sector stakeholders focusing on how we ensure students are prepared for STEM and Advanced Manufacturing positions after graduation.

1:30 p.m.  - Lt. Gov. Garcia will attend  an Education to Workforce Bridge Round Table discussion hosted by CSU to collaborate among multiple education programs and workforce development opportunities.
