DENVER — Monday, July 20 2015 — Gov. John Hickenlooper today order flags be lowered to half-staff tomorrow, Tuesday, July 21, on all public buildings statewide in memory of fallen Denver firefighter John Whelan. Flags should be lowered from sunrise to sunset.

Whelan, 46, died on July 15 from injuries he sustained during a June warehouse fire. He was a 15-year veteran of the department and is survived by his wife and young son.

Services for Whelan will be held at Faith Bible Chapel, 6250 Wright Street, Arvada on Tuesday, July 21 at 9:30 a.m.  The funeral service will be followed by a procession past Denver Fire Station 8 at 1616 Park Avenue to Mount Olivet Cemetery, 12801 W. 44th Avenue, Wheat Ridge.

The service and interment will not be open to the public, however all friends and uniformed first responders are welcome. Members of the public wishing to pay their respects are encouraged to line the processional route.
